My niece is getting married on Saturday. I have been helping her plan the wedding since she and her fiancé’ set the date. I’ve been so busy this past week helping her with last minute details for the wedding and preparations that can only be done in the week prior to a wedding. She’s also had two bridal showers, both of which I have attended, one of which I was in charge of in the past two weeks.
The showers and wedding preparations have of course reminded me of my own bridal showers and wedding that were just five years ago this month! Feeling nostalgic, I was just looking at some photos of my bridal shower and wedding when I realized that they were even more special to me because of open adoption.
Because of open adoption and the relationship and friendship I had built with Charlie’s adoptive Mom, A, I was able to ask her to be a bridesmaid in my wedding. Maybe asking your child’s adoptive mother to be a part of your wedding party seems a little untraditional in the standards of older adoptions and not necessarily right for every open adoption, but it worked for us. I do believe it is becoming a little
more common nowadays though.
More special moments occurred at my bridal shower, as it was held at A’s home. Since there was a “girl’s only” rule, S (Charlie’s adoptive Dad) and Charlie, were not at home but came back towards the end of the shower. I got to play with my son at my bridal shower! He was fascinated with the bows (as shown in the picture above) that had been on the gifts and wanted to play with them.
I’ve been struggling with adoption lately and need to remind myself of these positive and special moments that have occurred in our adoption.
