Visit Ideas for December

Do you have a visit coming up this month? If you get together with your child’s family during the month of December, I have some holiday themed ideas that you could do during your time together. Whether or not you are able to do some of these ideas will depend on your child’s age, how close or far apart you live, the type of relationship you have with your child’s family, and how open your adoption is.

Trim the tree ~ When it’s time to decorate your Christmas tree, invite your child (and family) over to help! Serve some eggnog or holiday punch, turn on some Christmas carols, and hang ornaments and tinsel all over that tree.

Go Shopping ~ Meet at the mall and offer to take your child shopping to buy presents for his/her parents with him or her. If your child’s parents have any shopping left to do that needs to be done without a child, this could be a great opportunity for them to get that done as well.

Watch Holiday Movies ~ Spend a cold afternoon or evening indoors and watch some fun holiday movies such as Elf, Miracle on 34th Street, or The Santa Clause. Don’t forget to make some popcorn (with extra butter!) and hot cocoa.

Get Crafty ~ If you enjoy doing crafts then why not make some ornaments with your child? Check out the holly wreath ornament and Santa handprint ornament that I have shared instructions for or browse the internet for other easy ornament ideas that you could make with your child. Be sure and make two; one for your tree and one for your child’s tree.

Get in the Kitchen ~ If you like to cook, bake, or create things and want to share this passion with your child, then why not try making a gingerbread house or baking some Christmas cookies. Kits are sold nowadays to make creating gingerbread houses easy and baking cookies can be fun if you use shaped cookie cutters and then decorate them with icing and sprinkles.

Go visit Santa ~ If you have other children that you are currently parenting, going to the local mall to visit Santa could be fun and will provide you with a great keepsake photo.

Go ice skating or play in the snow ~ Depending on where you live, you and your child could have some fun doing an activity in the wintery weather like ice skating, snowboarding, or just having a snowball fight.

Gift Exchange ~ Because it is the holiday season, you may wish for your visit to just be simple and spend time one another and share the gifts you have bought for your child.

It really doesn’t matter exactly what you are doing, as long as you are spending time together and having fun! If you have a great holiday themed visit idea, please share it!
