Open adoption is quickly becoming the popular practiced form of adoption in the Untied States. Adoption professionals and researches believe that in most cases open adoption can be beneficial to the child.
In the
Crisis Pregnancy Blog, I have been doing a short series on open adoption in which I
explain what open adoption is and describe
the goals and the benefits of open adoption for women who are pregnant and considering open adoption. In doing so, I have come across some tips for birth parents and adoptive families currently participating in open adoptions.
- Listen to each other's ideas and concerns.
- If something bugs you nicely tell them.
- Try to maintain contact regularly through email, letters, or phone.
- Be completely open and honest.
- Be flexible.
- Keep in mind that the purpose of open adoption is not to make it easier on the birth parents or adoptive parents, but to make it easier on the adopted child.
Share information, be expressive and affectionate.
Express concerns directly and graciously.
- Compliment each other and share your appreciation of one another.
- Be optimistic.
- Be proud of one another and your adoption relationship!
Open adoption is a relationship that needs work, honesty, and communication just like any other relationship.
