School is a big part of childhood. After all, we spend a huge chunk of our childhood in school.
Charlie started kindergarten this year and his first day was at the end of August. His first day of school and the few days leading up to it were an emotional few days for me. I knew I was missing taking him to buy a new back pack, lunchbox, and whatever other supplies are required for kindergarten nowadays. I knew I was missing making him a special breakfast that first nerve filled morning, driving him to school, walking him in, and meeting his teacher.
Thankfully, A. thought of this and takes the time to share “school stories.” She called me after their school supply shopping excursion and she even called me after leaving Charlie at school that very first morning and recapped all the events to me from her cell phone still in the school parking lot.
She called me the first time he got in trouble at school too! Don’t worry, it wasn’t the first day. I’ve heard about his teacher, how he likes eating in the cafeteria, a little boy who annoys him in his class, etc..
And the most recent “school story” was replayed to me today. A. and I had been playing phone tag and finally caught up this afternoon. She told me that at the end of last week, he had his first at home project. (Projects in kindergarten, starting early nowadays, huh?) The project was one of those standard construction paper turkeys where the body is made of the child’s foot print and the feathers are made of the hand prints. On each feather, he (with help) had to write one thing he was thankful for. Guess whose name graced one of the finger feathers? You got it, one says, “Coley, my birthmom.”
Granted, I am missing these moments and it is emotional and tough at times, but I am
thankful for the school stories and the opportunity to know what he is doing and how he is doing in school.
