Support groups can be beneficial to the members of the adoption triad. While online support is awesome and I encourage it as well, there is just something about the feeling you get the first time you are sitting in a room full of others who really understand adoption.
Each support group is different. Some groups may focus on a particular issue or subject related to adoption each night, while others may be more of a roundtable discussion. Some may invite speakers to share from time to time. You may click and fit in instantly with the other members or you may have to go a few times before you can truly judge how you feel about the group.
Some support groups are open to only one particular member of the adoption triad. (Example: birthmothers only) These types of groups are nice because they can provide a safe and non-judgmental place for members to discuss their emotions regarding the different issues you may face as a birthmother. There is also something very comforting and validating about being in a room full of others who have “been there, done that” and truly may understand the emotions you feel.
While some adoption support groups are only for one specific member of the adoption triad (example: birthmothers) some support groups are open to all member of the adoption triad. These groups provide you with the unique opportunity to hear from other sides of the adoption triad and can be helpful as well as it is nice to learn from other triad members about what emotions they experience.
The trick sometimes with support groups is finding them! It can be a challenge. In a
previous post, I’ve shared with you some tips on how to find a support group in your area, but I know it can still be difficult at times to find them so in an effort to make it easier for folks interested in attending an adoption related support group, I’d like to attempt to put together a list of support groups. If there is a support group in your area that you know about or attend, please tell me about it! You may do so by leaving the following information in the comment section or by emailing it to me at ColeyS@adoptionblogs.com Once I have a list together; I will post it and update it as needed.
