Summer time is an ideal time for visits for some of those participating in open adoptions. Kids are out of school. The weather is usually nice; hot but sunny and a prime time for doing things outdoors. If you haven’t made plans for your summer visits, do so now! The leaves will be falling again before you know it!

Below are some ideas for summer visits but as always keep in mind that some of the ideas will vary depending on exactly how open your adoption is, the type of relationship you have with your child’s adoptive parents, the leeway you have with visits, and your child’s age. The ideas below are intended to include the child’s adoptive parents and siblings (birth and/or adopted) as well. Also, not all of the ideas are possible for all readers as some may depend on where you live.

  • Go visit an amusement park! Amusement parks are so much fun and you’d have a blast spending a day riding roller coasters and eating junk food.
  • Visit a water park. Water parks are a fun way to spend time with your child and family and you’ll be cooling off as an added bonus. Many amusement parks have adjacent water parks and you can usually go back and forth between the two.
  • Go to the beach or the lake. If there is one near by, spending a day at the beach or the lake is fun. Pack a light lunch for all and have a picnic.
  • Go to the pool. Is there a public swimming pool near by? Spend some time at the pool with your child. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
  • Go to the movies. On a very hot summer day, one of my favorite things to do is go to the movies.

Whatever you do with your child this summer is sure to be fun because you’ll be making memories for the years ahead.
