Although it isn’t officially summer yet it sure feels like it here in the South! Summer is a great time for visits as the kids get out of school, the days tend to feel longer, etc. I think there is just a more fun feel to summer. I have some ideas of ways you can have fun with your child on summertime visits.
Note: Some of the ideas below will vary depending on exactly how open your adoption is, the type of relationship you have with your child’s adoptive parents, the leeway you have with visits, and your child’s age. The ideas below are intended to include the child’s adoptive parents and siblings as well. Also, not all of the ideas are possible for all readers as some may depend on where you live.
- Go to the amusement park. Amusement parks are a lot of fun and you will create fun memories with your child. Water parks are great fun too and many amusement parks have water parks adjacent to them.
- Go to the park. Pack a picnic and go to the park for an afternoon.
- Go for a swim. Cool off on a hot summer day and go play with your child and family at the pool.
- Do you live near a beach? Take an afternoon trip to the beach. Don’t forget a beach pail and shovel so you and your child can build a sandcastle together.
- What about the lake? Take an afternoon trip to the lake with your child and family.
- Do you live near a major league or minor league baseball team? Go watch a game together.
- Don’t feel like being out in the hot sun? Take a trip to the library or the movies. They are always nice and cool.
- Don’t feel like going anywhere at all? Stay home and watch a movie, do a craft together, or make some home made ice cream or something cold and delicious.
Whatever you do on your summertime visit – have fun!
