Sheryl Crow Builds Her Nest

The latest news in the world of celebrity adoptions is that singer, and toilet paper conservationist, Sheryl Crow has announced her adoption of a baby boy whom she named Wyatt Steven. The news was posted today at her official website and has already become the hot news topic online. Few other details were available except that Wyatt is now two weeks old and Ms. Crow is taking some family time to be with her new son.

Ms. Crow, who is a first time mother, had expressed her interest in adoption while doing an interview last summer with Larry King.

"If I were to adopt, I could love a child that came through somebody else's womb as easily as I could my own," Crow said.

I am sure that many opinions about this latest high profile adoptive Mom will be everywhere. I know there are things that I would love to know, even if it isn’t really any of my business.

How long was Ms. Crow preparing to adopt? Some people seem to believe that the rich and famous are rushed through the adoption process and that might be true. I am not rich or famous and our longest wait was 30 days, shortest wait 7 days, so go figure.

What agency did she use? I would love to know what their process is (since every single one of them seems to have a different one). Was it ethical?

Was her celebrity status used as an enticement to the birthmother? I mean gosh if you are placing you baby with Sheryl Crow you should at least get to meet her right? I would love to hear the perspective of baby Wyatt’s birthmother, as I am sure a lot of others would.

Is the adoption an open one? That brings up a huge question as to whether or not an adoption by someone famous can ever be an open one successfully. How does one choose a celebrity to adopt based on who they really are, or just what we know of their famous persona? If the world is truly moving toward more openness in adoption won’t this eventually catch up to the famous who adopt?

I have nothing against those famous folks who want to adopt, I guess I am just curious (like many others are) about those famous adoptions and if they will remain more like adoptions of the past, or progress along with us common folk into the world of openness.

In any account, a lot of stuff to think about. Think you have celebrity adoptions (or any adoption for that matter) figured out and guess what? Guess again.

Oh, I hope this kid is cool with one square of toliet paper per trip!

Oh, I hope this kid is cool with one square of toliet paper per trip!

Sorry, I'm finding this sentiment all over the web and I'm finding it personally offensive, rather lame and smacking of a lack of desire to care about our environment.

Cloth diapering is not what it used to be. It's easy, much more cost-effective than using disposables and infinitely more stylish than the cartoon characters splashed on tacky disposables. Not to mention that for children with skin sensitivities and allergies, it's the best way to avoid nasty breakouts that won't go away without medication. And, ya know, it helps the environment by not taking a bagillion years to actually disintegrate.

Look up FuzziBunz for what are, in my opinion, the best for leaks while simultaneously being the darn cutest. For those curious on how to start the process or how it actually saves you money (12 diapers per size), etc, google DiaperPin. It's a great site.

As for her adoption, while I hope it was ethical, I'm always wary of domestic adoptions with celebrities. Not because I think they're all unethical but because, if the expectant parents are fully informed of who the parents are intended to be, I think it puts a lot of that pressure to place, no matter if there is a change of heart, because, hey, it's a celebrity! Besides, what does the mother (or father) have to offer... that a celebrity can't exeed (speaking soley on a financial basis here). At the same time, part of me hopes that Crow could become a spokesperson for ethical open domestic adoptions.

But I'm a bit of a dreamer as well. :)

Jenna,
First of all the little aside was meant to be amusing, sorry you decided to take it so seriously.
Second, please do not assume that I know nothing about things such as cloth diapering, you would be very wrong.
As a matter of fact I am very familiar with the Fuzzi Bunz product. We have been using them since 2002 with my last two children who were both in diapers at the same time for about 18 mons. I had a collection of about 45 Fuzzi diapers to do the job for them. I love them, they are a great diaper and my son is potty training but I still have about 20 for him.
As for ethics and questioning them being present in domestic celebrity adoption you did get my point, I questioned that as well. I also hope that Crow could be encouraged to break some ground and show the world an open adoption (done well) with her son's birthmother.
