It’s summer time which for a lot of people equals vacation and traveling time. When I’m on vacation, as a birthmother, my thoughts often drift off to Charlie. If we are doing something neat I’ll wonder if he has ever done that before or would he like it. I try not to think these thoughts too much as I like to enjoy my vacation. However, I still think about him.

Below are a few ideas of things I do to “include” my birth son in our vacation.

  • Mail him a post card. I try to buy a cool post card somewhere that we are visiting and I mail it to him while away. Even if I know that I will beat it home, I still mail it from that city.
  • Buy him a souvenir. I try to buy him some sort of souvenir from where we are vacationing. Sometimes it is a t-shirt; while other times it might be an educational book (depending on where we are visiting) or a cool toy. I usually either mail him this when we get home or save it and give it to him the next time we have a visit.
  • Give him pictures. I take lots of pictures on a trip anyways, but I like to have some special ones just for Charlie. If I see something cool I think he might think is neat, I try to snap a picture of it. When I get home I usually print a few pictures just for him. I either mail these (usually with the souvenir item) or I give them to him at our next visit. I try to write the location, what is cool about it, etc. on the back of each picture.

So next time you are traveling and find yourself thinking of your child, buy him or her a postcard, jot him or her a quick note, and have a great time so you can tell your child about it later!
