Reader Question about Gifts for Birthmom

My daughter’s first birthday is coming up next month. Because of distance, our daughter’s birthmother will not be able to spend her birthday with us. I imagine (but don’t know for sure since I am not a birthmother) that this is going to be a very hard for day for her, so I’d like to do something special for her or send her a gift but I am at a loss as to what I should do or send. Do you have any suggestions?

First of all, you are right; children’s birthdays are one of the hardest days of the year a lot of birthmothers and while a gift can not ease her pain, I do think it is a sweet and a nice gesture to acknowledge her and let her know that she is being thought of. Try not to get too hung up on the actual gift as it is not so much the gift itself, but the thought behind the gift that makes it so meaningful in this case.

Below are a few of my suggestions for gifts that you could send to your child’s birthmother to remember and honor her on her child’s birthday.

  • Framed photos or a photo album filled with pictures of her child are always appreciated. The “baby’s first year” frames that hold a photo from each month of the baby’s first year are a cool idea.

  • Give her a gift certificate do something nice for herself such as a manicure, pedicure, or massage.

  • Sending her flowers on her child’s birthday is a great idea.

  • Give her a small pendant or charm with her child’s birthstone on it. Nothing fancy, just something small that she will think of her child each time she sees it.

Again, keep in mind; it’s not the gift but the thought!
