Questions

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of reading and researching on Open Adoption. I wrote a series on it for the Crisis Pregnancy Blog and posted some tips I found here in the Open Adoption Blog.questions

In my reading and research one of the number one reasons stated over and over of having an open adoption is that the child will have direct answers to his or her questions. When they become of curious age and began to ask questions like “why did my birthmom place me for adoption” in open adoptions they can go directly to their birthmom or birth parents and ask these questions and get answers.

My birthson is almost 5 and is beginning to ask some questions. Not any hard ones yet, just simple almost five year old questions. I anticipate that in the future the questions will get a little more difficult.

In thinking about what he might think and wonder in the next few years, I wrote a poem about those questions. I thought I’d share it with you all…

Questions
by Coley S.

“Sweet child, what questions do you have for me?
You will begin to learn of your adoption as you grow,
You will have many questions, I know.
Ask any questions you have of me
The truth will set us both free. “

“Do you ever think of me?”
Baby boy, I think of you every night and day
I think of you asleep and at play!
I think of my arms hugging you
And kissing your cheek too.

“Did you want to keep me?”
I wanted to keep you more than you will ever know,
It was the hardest thing I ever did, letting you go.
I have and will always keep you in my heart,
You were a part of me right from the start.

“Do you love me?”
I love you with every inch of my soul,
The best possible life for you was my goal.
You could not live on love alone,
You needed a Mom and Dad and a stable home.

“Was there something wrong with me?”
Heavens no, you were perfect in every way
With me, I wanted you to stay!
But doing for your child what is best,
Is every mother’s greatest test.

“So, do I tell people I have 2 moms?”
Don’t be ashamed of it honey, yes, you do
That’s a very special part of you!
You can proudly say you have two Moms that care.
Their undying love for you is something they will always share.

Never be afraid to ask me any questions at all,
I am here for you whenever you call.
I did what I thought was best for you,
And I hope one day you’ll understand that too!
