Positive: Always Around to Answer Questions

Another positive aspect of open adoption is the fact that Charlie has the ability to ask me any questions he may have related to adoption.

Charlie has always known he is adopted and his parents have done a terrific job of explaining adoption to him, but when those questions arise that involve why I made the choices he did, I prefer to the person answering them. As a birthmother, this is comforting to me because he gets the answers right from the source instead of second hand. His adoptive parents and I have discussed all of this before he was born and all came to the agreement that I should be the one answering the questions that directly revolve around my decisions or reasons for placing Charlie for adoption. I know that his parents could probably answer these questions for me since they know my reasons for placing and what not, but we all think that it is so much better for Charlie that he has the ability to come to me and ask them.

I honestly thought I wouldn’t have to deal with any questions from him until he was a bit older, but he surprised me in September with a question. It wasn’t a tough question; in fact it was cute and quite comical, but none the less, it was still a question and served as a wake up call. That question forced me to realize that his little brain is beginning to grasp the concept of adoption and become curious about it. The questions have started and although this first one was not too heavy, I’m sure they will become heavier later on down the road. While the questions may be hard for me to hear them, may stir up old emotions, or cause me pain, it’s my responsibility has his birthmother to be able to answer those questions for him.
