In my last two posts I have discussed two different hurdles that have come up in the relationship between myself and Charlie’s family. With a little bit of effort, we have been able to overcome these hurdles.
If you are facing a hurdle in your relationship, below are a few tips that have worked for us.
- Talk – I can not stress enough how important good communication is. If you can not discuss what is going on then you will never be able to overcome it. Keeping it inside and not discussing it will only eat at you and could possibly make the situation worse. Talk open and honestly about what is bothering you.
- Listen – Just as it’s very important to talk about what is going on, it is just as important that you listen to what the other person is saying.
- Space – If you need a little space to deal with your emotions, let the other person know. Set a time limit then reconvene. For example, you could say something like, “I need some space. Let me think about this, sort through my emotions and then I will call you next Friday.” But be sure to follow through with the commitment!
- Respect – Be respectful. Even if you may not agree with what the other person is feeling, be respectful that those are their feelings. There is really no right or wrong to feelings.
- Keep in mind that every relationship is going to have hurdles. It’s just a part of life and something that will happen from time to time. Try to remain positive; it’s not the end of the world when a hurdle arises.
- Avoid pointing fingers or placing blame on the other person.
Both parties involved must be committed to overcoming whatever obstacles life throws at you.
If only one individual is committed, then it’s probably not going to be as successful as it would if all involved are committed, but with a little bit of effort and good communication it is possible to overcome the hurdles that may come up. If you have been trying and are not having any luck working things out, then it may be time to consult a professional.
