In my
last post, I talked about Birthmother’s Day events in general, but in this post, I thought I’d share what goes on at the events we coordinate and host each year.
Birthmom Buds has hosted an event for the past three years. I enjoy planning these events and creating a special day with and for fellow birthmothers. I’m exhausted by the time Birthmom’s Day is over with all the work involved, but it is a good kind of exhaustion. We have this event in the my neck of the woods, in the south, but at some point in the future, we’d like to help coordinate events in various locations across the country.
Our events are always themed. It’s fun planning a themed day for a group of women! Our first year was a
luau theme, last year was “
Pampered Princess” (pictured)and this year, we are doing it up Hollywood style!
Our events always begin in the morning and the morning half of the day is light and fun including a light breakfast, get to know you session where gals can share a picture of their birth child or something that reminds them of their child, then we do some sort of craft. We’ve decorated picture frames the first year and decorated flip flops the second year.
Then we follow up with lunch. Our first year, we were within walking distance of a restaurant who agreed to donate lunch for all the ladies. Last year, one of our gals who is a caterer came down from West Virginia early and catered the lunch.
Then our afternoon is a bit more serious with speakers (usually a birthmom, adoptive mother, and adoptee.) We usually have a slideshow of pictures of our member’s children (which is always a big hit!) and then end up with our candle light ceremony where we light a candle in honor of our children.
Each year we’ve had birthmothers return and each year we have new birthmothers join us. While it is sad that this is what brings us together, it’s nice to be surrounded by other women who have a common bond. The love for our children brings us together and deserves to be recognized.
This year’s event is bigger and better than last year! I don’t want to give away too many details in case girls who are attending are reading ‘cause I know a few do, but we have some fun and special things planned! It’s on May 12th and is in Charlotte, North Carolina and is open to all birthmothers, young and old. There is no cost for the event. For more information you can check out this
web page or email us at birthmombuds@gmail.com for more details.
