I love poetry. I never dreamed back in high school when I was getting frustrated trying to find the symbolism in stanza after stanza of poetry, that one day I would actually be
thankful for poetry. But I am, I am thankful for adoption poetry!
I can be having a terrible day and find a poem that I identify with and feel less alone and re-group. Poetry is such an artistic expression and there is really no right or wrong to poetry since it as a form of art, so to speak.
Two of my favorite adoption poems are written by other birthmothers. Let me share them with you.
Tiny Footprints
by Jeannette Minnich
Before your lungs could breathe
and your eyes could see,
your little feet
were walking all over me.
Before you could crawl,
and even talk,
your little toes
took a walk.
They took a journey,
went far and wide.
They traveled to my soul
where they now reside.
With every second that passes
they make another move.
With every day that ends
they dig another groove.
No matter how long or how far
we might be apart,
your tiny little footprints
are all over my heart.
This next one was featured in a Dear Abby column.
On the Wings of a Prayer
by Lisa Bote-Phillips
I set you free on the wings of a prayer
To fly through life in His tender care,
You're free from the nest and the ties that are bound
Free from the pressures I carry around.
If I kept you, I'd only be cutting your wings,
Not offering the chance a true family brings.
The decision I made has my heart torn in two,
But I know what I'm doing is the best thing for you.
The sky is so vast, the mountains so high
Take wing and remember:
I Love You.
Goodbye
