I must admit that sometimes I am envious of some of the birthmoms I am friends with that receive tons of photos and sentimental things or gifts from their children’s adoptive parents. Not that I am greedy or materialistic, but I just need reassurance every now and then that I am thought of and appreciated.
Charlie’s adoptive Mom, A, is not one of those sentimental, “mushy” types – like me – so when she gives me something sentimental, it means that much more to me because it is a rarity.
When I saw Charlie and his family last week, A had some things for me she had been collecting for me, like a few pictures Charlie colored, a project he made at school last year as well as last years school photo. Also, in that pile was the “diploma” you see that was given to Charlie for completing four year old kindergarten. I saw it and was very touched at her thoughtfulness but then as A began talking about how she got it – I was even more touched.
I just assumed that it was a copy of Charlie’s original certificate, but I assumed wrong. A went to all the trouble of going to talk to Charlie’s teacher one day after school and ask her if she could make two for Charlie, one for me to keep and one for her to keep! I can not tell you how loved and appreciated it made me feel to hear her relay that story to me and that she went to all the trouble of explaining our situation to Charlie’s teacher and asking her to make two certificates for Charlie! It’s really nice to be able to have this memento from Charlie’s early school days.
So, this Love Thursday it’s about unexpected thoughtfulness!
