Love Thursday: Kindergarten Diploma

I must admit that sometimes I am envious of some of the birthmoms I am friends with that receive tons of photos and sentimental things or gifts from their children’s adoptive parents. Not that I am greedy or materialistic, but I just need reassurance every now and then that I am thought of and appreciated.

Charlie’s adoptive Mom, A, is not one of those sentimental, “mushy” types – like me – so when she gives me something sentimental, it means that much more to me because it is a rarity.

When I saw Charlie and his family last week, A had some things for me she had been collecting for me, like a few pictures Charlie colored, a project he made at school last year as well as last years school photo. Also, in that pile was the “diploma” you see that was given to Charlie for completing four year old kindergarten. I saw it and was very touched at her thoughtfulness but then as A began talking about how she got it – I was even more touched.

I just assumed that it was a copy of Charlie’s original certificate, but I assumed wrong. A went to all the trouble of going to talk to Charlie’s teacher one day after school and ask her if she could make two for Charlie, one for me to keep and one for her to keep! I can not tell you how loved and appreciated it made me feel to hear her relay that story to me and that she went to all the trouble of explaining our situation to Charlie’s teacher and asking her to make two certificates for Charlie! It’s really nice to be able to have this memento from Charlie’s early school days.

So, this Love Thursday it’s about unexpected thoughtfulness!

How awesome for you Coley! It was really nice of her to think of you and go out of her way to make sure that you got a copy of the diploma as well!

Okay this got me thinking this morning...

Are momento's such as this something that is often worked out ahead of time when planning an open adoption? When parents are working out letters and picture schedules, do they also discuss getting arts and crafts, school work, and extra copies of achievments? If not, do you think that they should be?

Julie,

I don't know anyone who has had school work, art projects, etc. in their post adoption contracts, that doesn't mean that it hasn't happened though....

I know many adoptive parents who send their children's birth parents things like this. I'm not sure what I think about whether or not these types of things should be included in post adoption contract agreements. I am going to have to think on that one a little bit.

Thank you Sue, Julie, and Marie for your comments. :)
