In case you don’t know what Don Pablo’s is or you are not lucky enough to have one in your area, let me enlighten you.
Don Pablo’s is a “Tex-Mex” restaurant well known for its blazing purple neon sign, killer margaritas, and real enchiladas. I worked at the local Don Pablo’s before, during, and after my pregnancy with Charlie.
As cheesy as it may sound, Don Pablo’s will always hold a special place in my heart. Don Pablo’s is where I met Charlie’s adoptive parents, S and A.
S and A were regular customers often coming in to each lunch on their lunch hours at work. After waiting on them for awhile, they just began to ask for me and we’d talk about more than just tacos. A is in a wheelchair, like Noah, and I felt comfortable enough to ask her wheelchair related questions.
When I got pregnant, I didn’t know I was pregnant until nearly six months along due to a failed depo provera (birth control) shot. So I found out I was pregnant and expecting a baby boy in just a few more months all in a matter of days. I was pretty shell shocked and dazed.
S and A were in eating lunch and for some reason I told them I was pregnant. I don’t really know what exactly possessed me to tell them I was pregnant. We’d talked about things other than enchiladas, but nothing THAT personal! And as they said congratulations, I explained that I was considering adoption and my reasons for doing so.
They told me their daughter was adopted and they told me about open adoption. They totally didn’t pressure me in any way – just gave me their number if I had questions about open adoption or just needed a friend to talk to.
I did call them only a few days later, initially just to ask questions, but I eventually came to the conclusion that they were to be the family to adopt my baby. All the while, meeting and hanging out with them at Don Pablo’s. My co-workers teased that Charlie was going to enter the world with a sombrero on his head shouting “ole!”
And because of all that, Don Pablo’s will always hold a special place in my heart. (and my stomach!)
