A (Charlie’s adoptive Mom) relayed a story to me the other day that has me amazed and very proud at the amount of compassion my little Charlie has for other people at almost six years old.

Some friends of A’s were adopting and were matched with an expectant mother. It’s a very long story as to why, but the friends called A and asked her to come up to the hospital because of some problems they were having with the social worker. A said ok but would have Charlie with her since he only had a half day of school that day. Driving to the hospital she tried to explain a little bit of what was going on, that this Mom (we will call her Brittany) was probably going to let their friends adopt her baby just as I did with him.

So, they get to the hospital and he asked if he could see the baby. Brittany was holding the baby. She said yes and Charlie went over to her. He then showed her so much compassion that I was crying as A relayed this story to me.

He begins to comfort Brittany, telling her that his birthmom gave him to his Mom and Dad, explaining adoption as much as he can at that age. He went on to tell her my name and that he had a brother named Noah and that I love him so much and he loves me and my family so much. He then told her that it was ok to be sad but that her baby would know she loved him just as he knows I love him!

Not quite six years old, Charlie was able to show Brittany more compassion than some grown adults have shown me since becoming a birthmother. I listened to this story in awe of that little boy. Oh, yes, I’m more than proud.

With tears in my eyes, I told A. what a testament that was, a testament to what a good job she has done in explaining adoption to Charlie and making sure he understands such a complex subject as much as he can at this age. She responded by correcting me and saying that it is a testament to what a good job we (her and I) have done in making sure he understands everything and knows that he is very loved by me.

What a very special young man!
It comes as no surprise to me that he has your compassionate nature, and that A is also doing such a beautiful job bringing that out to it’s fullest.

Coley, both you and A have excelled with your son. You can both be proud of him, but just as much, you can be proud of youselves. Great big pats on the back don’t come all that often, and this one has to be really special. John
