Last week in my post Side of Adoption I wrote about how I was excited about an upcoming visit with my best friend, Lani so for Love Thursday this week, I felt the need to discuss that visit. Due to all the craziness in each of our lives, we had not had the opportunity to really get together and spend anytime real time together since last September! That’s just way too long to go without spending some real quality time with your best friend.

I love any time I get to spend with Lani. Not only is she a great best friend, but she is a birthmother too. While I love my other friends (those who are not birthmothers) dearly, Lani just “gets it.” She understands what being a birthmother in an open adoption is all about. She knows me inside and out so I feel like I can discuss things with her that I don’t feel comfortable discussing with others. And sometimes it’s not what we discuss; it’s the unspoken words that speak volumes. I don’t have to say how I am feeling every moment and neither does she. We just know what the other is feeling sometimes.

So, what did we do while she was here? Well we crafted of course! Every time we get together we do some sort of crafting project together – it’s become our little thing and we have mementos of the time we have spent together. We have made flip flops, picture frames, candle holders, Christmas snowmen, etc. This time we appliquéd aprons. I love how our projects turn out; similar but very different just like our personality and who we are as people; similar yet very different.

But we didn’t just craft. We shopped. We went out. We stayed in. We laughed. We cried. We talked. We shared. We reconnected. We loved on one another’s kids. We also got professional pictures done. It was just a very nice visit. The only negative aspect of our visits is that they are not long enough and not frequent enough!
