Last Friday I went on a field trip to the apple orchard wit Charlie, his mom, and his whole class full of Kindergartners. Chaperoning a field trip is a fun thing for a Mom. My Mom used to chaperone our field trips when I was a child and I’ve been on a few field trips with Noah’s class over the years. However, as a birthmother this is something that I never thought I would be able to experience with Charlie. We had a really good time and this trip is something that I will treasure in my memories forever.
There were those funny moments and those moments of total chaos that you are going to have anytime you try and take thirty something five year olds somewhere but they just make the trip and the experience more endearing! It was surprisingly cold in the mountains that day so many of the kids were complaining of being cold but luckily Charlie’s mom had thought to throw in a jacket for him so he was able to stay warm. He also sported A’s sunglasses for much of the day because he kept complaining of the sun being in his eyes.
Because of the terrain of the apple orchard, A was not able to do very much with Charlie so she told me not to worry about her and go do things with Charlie. At first I was a little shy but I warmed up pretty quickly and Charlie was grabbing my hand and we were running off to do things. We took a hay ride with all of his classmates. We learned about apples and how the orchard works. We got to pick apples straight off the trees. We fed apples to the ducks. Well, more like the ducks dodged the apples that Charlie (and the other kids) were throwing at them! We had a picnic lunch. Do you know how long it has been since I ate a round peanut butter and jelly sandwich and string cheese? I felt like a kid again!
The above picture is one of my new favorite pictures and was taken on the field trip. Charlie and I are in this big apple “house” that is on the playground area. All in all it was a great experience and one that I walked away from feeling very blessed and very loved.
