Charlie actually made this little turkey last year at school but I didn’t get it till Thanksgiving was long gone. It is the first piece of artwork of Charlie’s that I have been given. I pulled it out since Thanksgiving is so close!

This is no ordinary or plain turkey! On each one of the turkey’s many colorful feathers, as part of a homework assignment (since when do kindergartners have homework) Charlie’s Mom had to help him write down one thing he was thankful for on each feather.

I don’t know how clear the picture is or if you can read all the things Charlie is thankful for, but he is thankful for a lot of things like food, teachers, the beach, his pet, his home, his cousins, God, the sun, the moon, all the stars, clothes, animals, his Mom and Dad, his sister, church, etc. The list continues, but my favorite little feather is a bright yellow one that proudly proclaims that he is thankful for “birthmoms.” Originally when they were working on the assignment he said “Coley,” then he said he wanted to add N (his sister) birthmom too and made a comment about how with out her birthmom N would not be his sister. It is truly amazing to see that even at his young age, he “gets” it in some way, shape, or form.

I’m thankful for Charlie and that he has parents that are doing a good job at making sure he understands adoption even at a young age so that it is a never a secret. I’m thankful for open adoption and that I that I have the ability to know how well Charlie is thriving. I’m thankful for his family who has accepted me as a part of their extended family.
