Part 1
Part 2
Since writing that initial letter to Charlie, I have continued writing letters to him.
I write letters on his birthday each year. I write letters after visits with him. I write letters when I am missing him a lot. I write letters when something big happens – like the day he said his first word.
Some of the letters I give to him, some I do not. The birthday letters I give to him each year. The other letters are more like journal entries only addressed to him. Someday I will probably let him read all the letters. Sometimes I just send him a card and jot a quick little note in it.
So, why do I send him letters since I do get to visit him a good bit? Well the letters he can keep and will have forever. He may not remember every memory and certainly not the ones he had in early life. The letters are a reminder of the memories we have and made together and of my never ending love for him. Also, when he looks back at the letters he will know that I even though I wasn’t parenting him, I was still aware of his firsts and the big moments and that I am proud of him for all he does and who he is.
Letter writing Tips:
- Always date your letters!
- If you don’t think you are the best writer in the world, don’t let that stop you. The sentiment is more important here than how good your letters are.
- You don’t always have to give your child the letter. You can save some letters for later in life.
- Your letters don’t have to be long or an actual letter. Jot a note in a cute card and pop it in the mail. Most kids love mail and your child will know that you are thinking of him or her.
