Today, I am going to begin the aforementioned series on writing letters to your child and the importance of doing so.
I write letters to Charlie. This started right after he was born when I wrote “the” letter. It was a letter A. suggested I write. She knew so much more about adoption than I did at the time. I was floundering along in the process, had done almost research or reading about adoption, but A. had read lots and was educated on it, and had one adoption under her belt so to speak. So anything she suggested, I carefully thought about.
When she suggested the letter I was a little unsure. The letter, as I keep referring to it, was a big letter in terms of what it would say. It was to be the first time I explained why I placed Charlie for adoption. In very simple terms, I explained my love for him that I chose adoption for him because I could not give him all that he deserved at the time. I wrote this letter when Charlie was only a few days old.
Some might say I shouldn’t have written that letter at the time; that I should have waited awhile to write or until he was older. In hindsight, I’m glad I went ahead and wrote it at the time. Why you ask? Because that letter, in its simplicity and full of emotion, has sat framed on his dresser almost since the day I gave it to him.
I wrote the letter, typed it and printed it on some really cute boyish paper. After I gave it to A. she told me she was going to frame it. It’s in a beautiful navy blue frame and graces his dresser for all to see.
How do I feel about that personal letter sitting there for all to see? I admit, at first, I was a little shy about it. But the thing is – Charlie gets to see it every single day and night. He may not even be able to read all the words in it yet, but he knows who wrote it and what it means.
To be continued……….

Haven’t wrote “the letter” to J. Do not know if I ever will but since I keep a journal for her and update it whenever I have a visit, get pictures or talk to L it is like one long continuing letter that really never ends.
