It’s almost time for school to start here in South Carolina. Summers are fun, but I am always ready for school to start back. Since it’s almost time for school to start, I’ll be doing a short series on some school related topics.
I have fond memories of school from childhood. School supply shopping was always a big deal in my family. I looked forward to coming home from school with that huge list of everything I needed, then going to Wal-Mart to buy everything with my Mom and little brother. I miss not being able to take Charlie shopping for school supplies and buying him a new backpack and lunch box and all the other things you must have to start school with.
Last year, Charlie entered kindergarten and attended his first ever day of school! His first day of school and the days leading up to it were very hard and bittersweet for me. I was fully aware of what I was missing. As always, I was upfront and honest with Charlie’s adoptive mother and told her that I hadn’t realized this milestone, his first day of kindergarten, would be hard and emotional for me. In a very kind way, she told me that although what she felt was not the same as how I was feeling, that she was sad too and that we could be sad together. It was a very kind and validating response.
She made me feel as included as I possibly could be without actually being there physically. I talked to them on the phone that morning as they were driving to school. Then after she took Charlie inside and what not, she called me from the car and we both cried for a minute. Then that afternoon after Charlie was out of school, she let him call me and tell me all about his first day of school. So while I wasn’t there in the motherly sense, I was still a part of things and knew what was going on.
