In my recent posts, I have shared
my personal story of finding support as well as
online resources for you to find support.
While online support is convenient, un-intimidating, and great, nothing beats the connection and intimacy of meeting another triad member like you face to face. Live support groups are a great place to meet other triad members.
There are different types of support groups out there. Some are only for birthmothers or whatever particular triad part they serve, while other support groups may serve all members of the adoption triad.
For groups that only serve birthparents or adoptive parents, the group and meeting others like you provide you with the support of someone who “has been, there done that.” While each person’s journey is unique and different, there’s an underlying bond that connects the members because they have each been through a similar experience.
Each support group is different. Some may focus on a particular issue or subject related to adoption each night, while others may be more of a roundtable discussion. You may click and fit in instantly or you may have to go a few times before you can truly judge how you feel about the group.
Groups that serve all members of the adoption triad provide you with the unique opportunity to hear from the other triad members. I know I am always hungry for the stories and advice of adoptive parents and adoptees.
You are probably wondering how you can find a support group in your area, right. If your adoption was done through an agency, check with them first. Many agencies facilitate support groups.
Even if you’re adoption wasn’t through an agency that has a support group, go ahead and check with local agencies. Some agencies run support groups and welcome anyone to attend, not just those who used their agency.
Below are a few websites that can help you in finding a live support group in your area.
