Spending time with and bonding with your child during a visit is one of the reasons for visiting isn’t it?
Below are a few ways that a birthmother and her child can bond during visits.
1. Get down on your child’s level and interact. If your child is small and still plays on the floor, get down on the floor and play with him or her. Grab one of his/her toys and engage him/her with the toy, stack blocks, play with dolls, etc.
2. If your child is still a baby, rock or sing to him or her.
3. Read to your child. I think reading is such a great bonding activity. Ask your child to select his/her favorite book and then snuggle up in a quiet spot and read a few pages together. If your child is a little older and learning to read, try asking him or her to read to you!
4. Talk with your child. This seems like a given for a visit, talking with your child. But I mean really talk with him or her. Ask him/her questions about what’s going on at school, their hobbies, sports or extra circular activities. Always let your child know that you are always there for him or her should he or she have questions for regarding his/her adoption or anything in general.
5. Do an activity together. Do something, such as making cookies or playing a computer game with your child. You are not only having fun but bonding with one another as well.
6. Focus on your child. You don’t have to run off all alone, but spend a few moments just absorbed in your child. Ignore the other things going on, and people in the room, and just focus on your child. This could be done simply by reading together, as suggested above.
