Good morning! My name is Karen, and I’m one of the new bloggers at AdoptionBlogs.com. I’ll be writing about open adoption and domestic infant adoption – specifically our adoption, but not only our experiences. First, though, a little bit about me and my family.

My husband and I started looking at adoption after we had struggled with primary infertility. He had always talked about adopting, but then wanted to wait “until we had tried everything else”. So we did. Just about everything else short of IVF. We had also talked about adopting an older child or a child with medical needs (I have some special ed. teaching credits, but also have been a bit reluctant to “bring my work home”). When we finally settled on an agency, they had talked us into at least trying an infant adoption for our first-time parenting experience.

I should also say at this point that I’m an older parent as well. When our daughter was placed with us, I had recently turned 40. So that makes our experiences a bit different than average as well. Our daughter is now 7, has just started second grade, and is a reasonably well-adjusted child. Her birth/first/mother, M, is a part of our lives to the extent that she can be. We have an ongoing relationship with M’s parents, including letters, pictures, and visits several times a year. We currently do not have any contact with our daughter’s birth/first/father S or his family, although that has always been a possibility.

Open adoption has not been easy for any of us – I can only speak hypothetically based on what we’ve seen from M, but I’m guessing not any of us – but we’ve all tried to make it easy for our child. After all, this is supposed to be for her. “In the best interests of the child”, as the saying goes. I’d really like to write more about that, as well as how we’ve handled talking about our open adoption with her teachers and classmates. Which reminds me…I think I’ll be writing about our family tree soon as well.

Nice to meet you all. I’ll be talking to you again soon.

I’m going to leave this comment up, because I’m still not certain of the rules here. Just to let you know, tyracole36, this might not be the right forum for your request…
