Recently, a few birthmoms have asked me for gift ideas for Christmas gifts for their birth children since the holidays are very quickly approaching! As I said in the series I just finished on gift ideas for birthmothers from their children or their children’s adoptive parents, don’t feel like you need to run out and by the most expensive, fancy gift you can possibly find for a child your child’s age. Even with children, it’s still the thought behind the gift that counts, although they may not realize it till they are older.

I tend to give Charlie a few small gifts. I like to give him one or two things that are meaningful and will mean something to him later in life, like the yearly Christmas ornaments I mentioned in my last post, and then an age appropriate toy or two that he can play with now.

Some ideas for other gifts you could give your children:

Books
Books are great for any child of any age and promote reading. I love giving books as gifts. Choose an adoption related children’s book or one of your favorite books from your childhood and write something short and sweet in the front of the book along with the date. If you are looking for adoption related books try The Adoption Shop and Tapestry Books.

I also like the personalized create-a-books that incorporate the child’s name and friends into the story. I gave Charlie one of those using Noah’s name as one of the friends’ names in the story. You can find those at Create-a-Book.

Bible
Depending on your faith and religion, you could give your child a Bible. They make some cute children’s Bibles nowadays and most places will engrave your child’s name on it for free. Most of the time they have a page in the front of the Bible that you can write who it is for, who it was given by, and the date. You could also write your favorite verse on the inside.

Jewelry
If your child is a girl, jewelry makes a great gift. Charm bracelets make a great gift as you can keep giving charms to add to it as gifts over the years. Bracelets with her name or initials engraved on them are also neat. A locket with yours and her picture in it is another idea, so that “you are always near her heart.”

For Young Children

For young children such as newborns, infants, and toddlers, blankets are a great gift. You could buy one and have your child’s name and initials embroidered on it or you could try making one if you are a crafty person. I shared instructions awhile back on how to make a no sew fleece tied blanket that is very easy to make.

  1. I always give a book because that’s just who I am. A big book nerd. And then I figure out what size she’s wearing and what she currently likes toy wise. I’ll save the meaningful gifts for later when she fully “gets it.”

I hate to give toys. Always have. I tend to get books for J and this year she is getting a blanket (thanks for the suggestion) and a kids digital camera since she is the camera ham. Now she can take her own.

i did the blanket idea even had her named embroydered on it and now my boy im going to raise has one too. that ways they have that “baby memory” is something they have in common.

  4. I do not get to send gifts. I am keeping a journal for her, a photo album for her, and I also get her a card for Christmas, Easter, and her birthday and fill them out and put the date on them.
