Gifts for Baby’s First Christmas

A reader recently asked this question:
“This Christmas will be my (birth) daughter’s first Christmas. She is just three months old and I am struggling with what to get her. What do you give a three month old?”

Obviously a three month old isn’t going to know what you have given her. She won’t remember it later. But as a birthmother, I can understand why you want to give her a gift and why it is stressful to come up with a gift that is just right.

Charlie was just around three months old his first Christmas and I can remember thinking the same thing. Babies of that age don’t really play with toys yet and Charlie had all the clothes a boy his age could wear. A few people suggested that I just not worry with giving him a gift that first Christmas but I needed to, not so much for him but for me. I ended up giving Charlie an ornament as well as a blanket. The ornament was a special “baby’s first Christmas” ornament and had a place on the ornament where you could write in the child’s name, birth weight, length, and birth date. The blanket was something I made for him.

A few other suggestions of things you could give your child for his/her first Christmas:

  • I think an ornament is appropriate; especially if you wish to make it a yearly tradition. Although your child won’t remember his or her first Christmas, an ornament is something tangible for your child to later look at and see that you were thinking of him/her.
Stuffed animals are always great for babies and again could make a nice keepsake for your child to one day look back on.

  • If you are crafty, you could try making your child a blanket. All babies need blankets and this one would be special because you made it! (Check out my instructions for a no sew fleece blanket.)

  • If you are religious you could get your child a Bible. They make some nice ones nowadays that come in pink or blue and you can usually have your child’s name engraved on it.

  • I also love the idea of a piggy bank with your child’s name on it.

Our daughter's birthmom sent her some of her favorite children's books for her first Christmas with little notes written inside about how much she loved her and how these were her favorite stories when she was little. We are all book lovers, and they're a great way to connect. Our daughter can pick out every book her birth mom has ever given her from the book shelf. (She sends books for birthdays and Christmas.)

Aw, that's a great idea! Thank you for sharing. I typically send my bson a book each birthday and include a note in the front as well. :)

I love these ideas. I do not get to see my birth daughter, therefore I do not get gifts for her. I do, however, put pictures in a photo album just for her and keep a journal that I write to her in. I also write poems for her.
