In my
last post, I wrote about my personal story of finding another birthmother to support me in my new journey of birthmotherhood. It took a little searching, but I was able to find Lani pretty early on in the process.
The good thing about online support is it is not intimidating and a good way to get a feel for the adoption world. If you are a new to the adoption triad, are “coming out of the closest” about your position in the triad, or have not felt comfortable speaking out about your position in the triad, online support is a good stepping stone and starting place.
Great places to begin the search for support are right here under your nose at adoption. com
Forums – The forums here at adoption.com are a vast and large area with many different smaller areas for support on many different topics; unplanned pregnancy, adoptive mothers, birthmothers, and open adoption just to name a few. My only word of warning (and it’s not so much a warning as it just telling you) with the forums is to keep in mind that you may not be posting just to birthmothers (or whatever part of the triad you are.) But that you are posting to all members of the triad. I look at this as a plus sometimes though as it is nice to have adoptive mothers or adoptees weight in with their point of view when you are looking for advice on a particular issue.
Mailing lists – There are also many mailing lists that pertain to all the different parts of the adoption triad. You have lists exclusively for birthmothers and then lists for birthmothers and adoptive mothers partaking in open adoptions as well as lists for adoptees, etc. Lists run through your email so instead of posting on a forum you are getting messages directly in your email box.
