Although I don’t parent Charlie on a daily basis, I am still involved in his life and can provide him with additional support, love, and encouragement. Since I believe a good education is so important and it was so important to me growing up, I like to encourage Charlie to do well in school too.
Some ways that I encourage Charlie in his education and ways that other birthmothers could encourage their child or children in his or her education are listed below.
1. Before the start of a new school year, send your child a card or a note in the mail telling them that you hope they have a great year at school. As a child and adolescent, I always looked forward to the new school year – it was kind of like starting with a clean slate. But I was always nervous too. Sending your child a card and letting them know how proud you are of them could alleviate some of the fears and anxieties he or she may be feeling. Include some fun pencils or erasers in with the card! If your child has access to email, you could send him/her an
e-card.
2. Always ask your child about school and his or her grades whenever you speak with him/her. Let him know that you are interested in his schooling.
3. Share with your child what subjects you struggled with in school. They may be the same subjects that your child has difficulty in and perhaps you could offer suggestions or pointers of how you got through those subjects.
4. Buy your child educational games or toys for gift giving holidays. Books are always great too and you could give your child some of the books that you enjoyed as a child too.
5. If your child is learning to read, ask him or her to read to you sometime at a visit.
Even though you are not there on a daily basis, you can still encourage your child to do well in school!
