I love crafts that incorporate a child’s handprints and think that these type of crafts making awesome keepsakes for birthmothers. So, today I will share a great and easy Christmas ornament craft that adoptive parents can make or help their child make for their child’s birthmom or anyone in their birth family really!
Materials needed:
White foam
Red Felt
Flesh colored Felt
White fake fur or felt
Wiggly eyes (optional)
Glue
Ribbon
Instructions:
1. Trace your child’s handprint onto the white foam. If your child is old enough to do so, he or she could trace their own handprint onto the white foam. Cut out the handprint.
2. Cut another piece of white foam into an elongated “B” shape. This will become Santa’s mustache. Use your child’s handprint as a guide as to how big to make this shape. Eventually, this will overlap the handprint.
3. Cut a piece of the red felt into a half circle.
4. Cut a piece of the flesh colored felt into an oval.
5. I built the whole ornament on a second piece of white foam just to make it a little bit sturdier. Glue down the piece for the flesh first.
6. Glue down the red felt half circle on top of the flesh colored felt.
7. Now, glue down the handprint and over lap the piece of foam you have cut out for the mustache on top of the handprint.
8. Let it dry for a little bit then cut the whole ornament out.
9. Add wiggly eyes or black dots for eyes.
10. Cut the piece of fur to fit Santa’s hat as trim. Glue that down.
11 Loop a piece of ribbon and glue it on the back of the ornament as a hanger.
Now you are finished and you have an ornament keepsake that any birthmom will surely treasure! You can also make this on a card using paint instead of felt. Check out
this link for an example.
And if Santa doesn't float your boat, I found a
cute reindeer that is made out of a footprint and handprints.
