I actually got a request for more “Crafting with Coley” and scrapbooking posts! I figured I was boring you readers to tears with my Martha Stewart wannabe ramblings!
But you ask and you shall receive. I’ll try and do at least one “Crafting with Coley” post a month and yes, it will somehow have some relevance and relation to adoption.
So this month’s Crafting with Coley segment will be Decoupage Picture frames. Birthmoms could make a decoupage picture frame to hold a special photo of your child or you could make one for your child to hold a special photo of you and your child and adoptive moms could make one for their child’s birthmom. They are easy, inexpensive to make, and don’t take a lot of time. Depending on the age of the child, he or she might be able to help. This is also the craft I taught at the
PAGE Birthmom’s Get Together in February.
Items Needed:
- Wooden Picture Frame (Can get these at most craft stores)
- Elmer’s or some type of white glue
- Sponge brush
- Plastic or disposable bowl
- Tissue paper in different colors, patterns, shapes, sizes
- Paint (optional)
Instructions:
- If you wish, paint the wooden frame any color you like. I typically do this as it makes it easier if you happen to leave any spots that don’t have tissue paper covering them.
- Mix equal parts of glue and water in the bowl.
- Cut or tear your tissue paper into different shapes and sizes. Begin to adhere the tissue paper to the frame using the sponge brush and the glue/water mixture. Continue adhering tissue paper to the frame until you have it as you want it.
- Brush an entire coat of glue over the frame to give it a little gloss and then let it dry.
- Optional last step – You can spray the frame with a clear acrylic finish which will just give it a little bit of shine.
Use your imagination, be creative, and have fun!

Second photo is a frame I made. I painted the frame hot pink first then decoupaged butterflies cut out from tissue paper.
