Caught Off Guard

There are times when being a birthparent creeps up on me unexpectedly. While my son is never too far from my thoughts, I don’t think about adoption twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and while I am a birth mother and my role in Charlie’s life is very important to me, it’s just one of the many hats I wear. So, I’ll be minding my own business (so to speak) watching television or reading, and boom! There’s something regarding birthparents right in front of my face.

The premiere of the Beverly Hills 90210 spin off is a prime example. From what I had read about the new show when it was first mentioned, I knew that one of the main characters would be an adoptee. I knew birthparents might be mentioned but I was totally caught off guard when two of the characters ended up being birthparents themselves.

Two of the main characters are students, Naomi and Annie. Apparently, Naomi’s Mother, Tracy, and Annie’s Dad, Harry, were an item back in the day. And apparently they conceived a child together and Tracy placed that baby for adoption without ever telling Harry that she had been pregnant!

That was not what I expected! I was caught off guard and thought about it for a minute. I knew I had the option of continuing to watch the show to see where they took that story line or turning it off.

Typically, I continue watching things like that to see where they take the story. That night however, I wasn’t in the mood, and turned my Television off. Sometimes, the feelings of being a birthmother can be so overwhelming that I wish I could turn them off, but I can’t, not that it would be healthy anyways so I push forward, dealing with them one day at a time.
