I was browsing my church bookstore not looking for anything in particular or even in a particular section when a book caught my eyes. It was titled
A Treasury of Adoption Miracles; True Stories of God’s Presence Today by Karen Kingsbury. I immediately thought it was probably a book for adoptive parents as those are more common than books for birthparents but I was intrigued so I picked it up and looked at it.
I read the synopsis on the back of the book and quickly found out that it was a book of different short stories. Still, I figured that it was more for adoptive parents. I read a bit more and discovered that stories of birth parents and adoptees were included as well.
Then, I opened up the book and looked at the first story. It was the story of a birthmother. Lately, I’m really enjoying books that have short stories in them as I hardly ever have a big chunk of time to read but with short story books I can read one story, put it down, pick it back up later, and so on. So, I decided to give it a try. I bought the book and that night after I put my son to bed, I grabbed my book, got in a hot bubble bath, and started reading. Of course, I didn’t finish the book that first night, but over a week or two I did.
It’s not a bad book but I don’t know that it is a book everyone would like. If you are not in a “good place” with adoption at the moment, I don’t think it would go over real well. The stories really are “miracle stories.” Those feel good adoption stories that are very rare.
The first chapter is a prime example of that. In that chapter, we are introduced to a birthmother who placed her daughter in a closed adoption a little over twenty years ago when she was a teenager. She’s now married and has two daughters that she is parenting. She goes to her daughters’ school for a parent/teacher conference where she is introduced to a student teacher from a local college who is helping out in her daughter’s class. She immediately feels a connection to this student teacher and yep, you see where this is going, right? It turns out that the student teacher is her long lost birth daughter!
While the stories are rare and once in a life time type situations, it was nice to focus on the positive side of adoption for a few minutes.
