Today CBS correspondent Steve Hartman shared a very touching story of adoption specialist Diane Sadovnikov and her most difficult adoptive placement to date, the possible future placement of her own two daughters.

As director for an adoption service Diane has helped to place over 300 Ukranian orphans with loving American families over the years. Friends and family report her excellent ability to match children with a family that best suits their individual needs. Diane has now put that experience to use in the search for a new adoptive family for her girls.

Now due to late stage 4 cervical cancer Diane is preparing for the adoptive placement of her two daughters, 9 year old Christina and 6 year old Rebekah, upon her passing. Being a single mother with few relatives, Diane has taken very seriously her search for a good family to care for her children when she is no longer able. The article states that she has found what the girls need in the form of a family friend who will adopt them.

“The only reason I’m able to do it is because, for me, a way of showing them love is taking care of them whether I’m here or not.” Diane explains.

Though she has made arrangements for the future of her girls, Diane will keep fighting her battle with cancer in high hopes of winning it. The prognosis is a difficult one with reported 90 % mortality rate.

I was very touched by Diane’s story, her battle with cancer, as well as her no doubt emotional and difficult preparations for her daughters. As she is someone who an understanding of the adoption experience I am sure she has made sure of a secure future for her two girls in the event of her passing. Hopefully everyone who hears her story will send their thoughts and prayers to this family for whatever their future might hold for them.

  1. Prayers indeed.

I also hope that those who try to use the “I could never do that” line when talking about birth parents and placing stop to think about this particular situation. Hard times call for very hard decisions.

    Blessings upon that family.

This makes me sad and hits very close to home. My husband and I recently had our wills drawn up and came across the few relatives (actually one relative) scenario and it really scared me. I appreciate being able to make these types of decisions in a good place, not facing a desperate situation.

    Good point Jenna.
