Lately, I’ve heard adoption picnics mentioned by several different birthmothers. Apparently more adoption agencies are beginning to host adoption picnics.
If you have never heard of an adoption picnic before, let me explain. Adoption picnics are hosted by various adoption agencies for the people who successfully completed adoptions through their agency. The picnics are for birthmothers, adoptive parents, and the child. It’s a fun way for them to get together and spend time with one another. I’m sure it’s also fun for the people at the agency who get to see how everyone is doing over time.
Today, I ran across this
story from a news station in Washington State. It is about an adoption picnic through an adoption agency in Washington State. Apparently this agency has been hosting their adoption picnics for nineteen years now. Almost one thousand people attended the picnic. For some though, it’s the only chance they get to see each other through out the year. Often times at these picnics they have other recreational activities for the children and their families, both birth and adoptive, to enjoy. It seems like a fun way to spend time with one another.
For those who are new to adoption or may be wary of open adoption I think that this would be a good way to sort of break the ice and begin to spend some time together but I do not think it should be the only time a year that they spend time with one another.
I have a few birthmother friends who have attended these types of get togethers through their agencies. They do say that they are fun and that they look forward to them all year along.
Maybe more adoption agencies will begin hosting adoption picnics or some type of event that will bring adoptive parents, birth parents, and adoptees together.
