Birthmother's Day

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 08:03 am , 418 words, 391 views
Categories: Mom's Day/Bmom's Day

Birthmother’s Day is not a holiday you will find on your calendar. Nor will you find Birthmother’s Day cards in the aisles at Hallmark.

Birthmother’s Day is beginning to become more recognized in the adoption community. It was created in 1990 by a group of Seattle birthmothers not only to educate others about adoption and bring recognition to birthmothers but to give birthmothers the opportunity to come together and honor the children they gave life to and relinquished. Birthmother’s Day is always... more

Mother's Day Hard All Around

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 09:13 am , 337 words, 110 views
Categories: Holidays

Recent posts by Theresa and Cindy discussed how Mother’s Day is a hard day for their children which in turn can make it a hard day for themselves. I appreciated their posts as I had never thought about it from that point of view.

Mother’s Day is of course, a hard day for others in the adoption community as well. I don’t know that birthmothers experience the loss of their motherhood more... more

Empty Easter?

Easter is one of the most monumental times of the year for believers. Because of the emptiness of a long ago burial tomb our lives can hold hope for a full and forever future. The greatest gift ever was in the form of an “empty” Easter morning.

Our family celebrates like many others. We went to church, followed by the egg hunts both there and at the home of grandparents, but through out the day I found myself falling into a different kind of empty feeling. Looking at my children I could not help but think of what their birthfamilies have... more

St. Patrick's Day

Are you seeing green today?? In case you are not aware, it’s an Irish holiday, St. Patrick’s day. I don’t do a lot for St. Pat’s day but I do usually wear green and think of my ancestors and roots.

I have a little bit of Irish in my heritage. My maternal Grandfather’s family is of Irish descent. One of my cousins even got married in a kilt made in our family’s plaid and I had a bag piper playing bag pipes as I walked down the aisle when I got married as a tribute to my Irish roots.

When I was in high school my Dad and I got involved with... more

Fat Tuesday Ya’ll, With Some Adoption Thoughts

Posted by : Deb Donatti in Open Adoption Blog at 08:50 pm , 635 words, 46 views

Head ups ya’ll! Here is your last time to go wild before Ash Wednesday! Break out your beads and little feathered head gear and go a little crazy. While I have never been one to do any topless dancing for beads (let’s face it I would put an eye out with these thangs), I do however wonder about the way people celebrate before such a somber time. Isn’t it a bit weird?

This breaking free in celebration is the Christian world experiencing true joy over the sacrifice they know is to come. Soon Jesus will put his own life aside in favor... more

Broken Gifts

At my house all the Christmas decorations are put away. Some of the many gifts from the day already broken.

Broken gifts. What do you do?

Well if they are the typical type you can stand in excruciatingly long lines at the retailer to hopefully return for pennies on the dollar of the original price that was paid. That is if you have a receipt. In either case expect a headache.

The fractured gifts I refer to however are not the mass-merchandiser variety. This year was a fresh disappointment for me because it was the first Christmas... more

Merry Christmas from Our Entire Family

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 03:33 am , 250 words, 56 views
Categories: Coley's Personal Story, Christmas

Yes, that’s right! Merry Christmas from all of us – no matter if we are separated by miles between adoption situations or separated by earthly boundaries for reasons unbeknownst to our hearts. Today, on Christmas Day, in this spirit we wish all of you a Merry Christmas!

I love this little card I created just for YOU! That’s me, yours truly, dawning my pink (fave color!) sequined Santa Hat, Noah, being the clown he is, Charlie showing off his Dad’s too big tie, and Jason placing some poinsettias at the grave to honor his mother, whom he lost in July of this... more

Grown Up Christmas List

The song, Grown Up Christmas List made popular and sang by Amy Grant, has been one of my favorite Christmas songs for years now. Each time I hear it, its heard in a different manner, a different time in my life, therefore the songs mean something different each year; something different yet familiar as I do know the song.

Do you remember me? I sat upon your knee; I wrote to you With childhood fantasies.

Bicycles Made Me Cry!

Oh the holidays! Sometimes I cry over the smallest little things, like BICYCLES!

Let me back up….

Last night, I was running in Wal-Mart to get a few things I needed to finish some holiday baking for gift baskets we are making for the many members of my husband’s large family. The parking lot was busy and crowded as always at this time of year, so I parked near the Lawn and Garden entrance and walked in that entrance, which is where a lot of the Christmas stuff gets moved to at this time of year; including the bicycles.

Oh the bicycles! There... more

Love Thursday: Trimming the Tree

I love this picture of Charlie from the Christmas season of last year. As I mentioned in my post yesterday that one of the perks to having our Christmas visit after Christmas was getting more holiday photos. This was one of the holiday photos from last year that I received in a Christmas collage frame.

As you can see he is decorating their very tall tree. He is reaching on his tippie toes to get the ornament in just the right spot. He loves Christmas and loves decorating and showing off... more
