Thursday was a huge day for Bob Wilkey of Inverness Florida, he became a father for the first time to a new daughter Darlyn. Mr. Wilkey had always wanted to be a father, he was a brother, an uncle with many nieces and nephews, but he had never been blessed with his own child until Darlyn, and she was definitely in need of a father.

The interesting twist to this story of adoption recently reported in the Citrus County Chronicle Online, could be that... more

God Is In The Details

I like to believe that as complicated and emotional as adoption can be, there is indeed a higher purpose involved. Those of us who have taken this path less traveled can find faith and hope that we have all been brought together through adoption for a bigger purpose known only to our God.

When I think of how many of my own ideals I have been asked by God to set aside by becoming an adoptive parent I wonder how I can possible meet the task at hand. Certainly there are times when joy is a reward for all the devotion... more

Friday Lyrics: Lullaby in Blue

I’ve always been a huge Bette Midler fan. She was one of the singers that I molded myself after as a girl. I loved her music and thought she was so cool with her bright red hair.

Not too long after becoming a birthmother, I came across a Bette Midler song called Lullaby in Blue. In the song, Bette takes on the role of a birthmother and talks about how society treated her when she was pregnant at seventeen, calling her a “stupid girl.” She sings of how she thinks of him each year on his birthday and about the children she went on to have and their resemblance... more

Sunday Inspiration: The Daisy's Story

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 06:17 pm , 251 words, 150 views

I have always loved daisies for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was very close to my paternal grandmother and spent a lot of time with her. Her name was Daisy so because of her that flower has always been one of my favorites. Give me daisies over roses any day and I’m a happy woman.

I wanted daisies in my bridal bouquet in memory of her. Carrying those daisies in my bouquet that day made me feel closer to her.

I came across this story of the daisy today online and knew it was perfect for this week’s Sunday... more

Friday Lyrics: What Hurts the Most

You all know how much I love music and how certain songs just resonate with in me. I can identify with some songs and feel less alone. Each week, I will post lyrics to a song that is meaningful to me and relates to my adoption experience and explain why and then share the lyrics with you.

I love Rascal Flatts. They have many good songs. I’ve written about their song, My Wish before. But today, I’m going to share the lyrics to a different song... more

Sunday Inspiration: My Life is but a Weaving

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 10:36 am , 250 words, 475 views
Categories: Inspiration, Poems

I recently came across this poem and instantly fell in love with it. It talks about how God weaves the events in our lives and I truly believe that.

I don’t necessarily believe that it was in God’s plan for me to become unexpectdly pregnant at a time in my life that I couldn’t care for my baby . But I do believe, that once my mistakes (meaning my pregnancy, NOT Charlie) had been set into motion and my choice about placing Charlie for adoption had been made, God interviened and led me on the path that I am now on.

I do believe that He matched me with... more

I don’t know how many of you out there are American Idol fans, but I am and tune in most of the time. All the annoying auditions are over, America’s voted, and we are into the top final twelve. One was sent home at the end of the show Wednesday night.

For those of you who don’t watch much Idol, once you get to the final 12 contestants, each week is a themed week and the contestants have to perform a song that fits in with that theme or genre of music. This week’s theme was Dianna Ross songs and she came earlier in the week and worked with each of the... more

Sunday Inspiration: The Starfish Story

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 10:33 am , 359 words, 132 views
Categories: Inspiration, Poems

I only recent was told about the Starfish Story, but I love it. In my opinion, it is very inspirational. The message speaks to me as sometimes I feel like giving up. But the message in this piece is loud and clear – keep on trying to make a difference. If you make a difference to one person, then that one person is enough.

Based on the story by Loren Eisley...

I awoke early, as I often did, just before sunrise to walk by the ocean's edge and greet the new day. As I moved through the misty dawn, I focused on a faint, far away motion.... more

Ten Adoption Quotes

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 02:24 pm , 364 words, 1924 views
Categories: Inspiration

Theresa’s recent post in the adoption parenting blog got me thinking of my own favorite adoption related quotes....

I love quotes. They can inspire, motivate, or move me. I have a “quote box” which is basically just an index card box that I decorated. I write different quotes that I consider meaningful on an index card and stick it in the quote box. I have the box divided into sections, so if I need a quote for something all I have to do is go... more

Some of you seemed to enjoy last Sunday’s Inspirational post entitled A Healing Prayer, so I thought that each Sunday I would share something I find inspirational with my readers, whether it be a poem, a story, or a quote.

This week’s Sunday Inspiration is a poem that I am sure some of you have heard or read before called Footprints in the Sand. I love this poem and it rings very true for me. I know that no matter how tough things get that God is always there for me. Sometimes... more
