"Feel Good" Adoption Story

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 03:46 pm , 325 words, 158 views
Categories: Story/Article/Essay

I recently came across one of those “feel good” adoption stories in a Women’s Day magazine. Every now and then I need one of these positive stories. Writing about adoption and being an active member of the adoption community can be a tad overwhelming at times. I see a lot of the “hurt” that adoption causes amongst the birthmothers I talk with. So, sometimes I need to read one of those not too common “feel good” adoption stories and be reminded of the good.

In this particular story, we are introduced to Eileen. In 1977, when Eileen was a teenager she... more

Finally Reading The Girls Who Went Away

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 03:24 pm , 363 words, 114 views
Categories: Book/Film/Television

Currently, I am reading The Girls Who Went Away by Ann Fessler. If you are not familiar with the title and author, this book is about women who got pregnant sometime between the end of World War II and the passing of Roe vs. Wade and were forced to give up their children for adoption.

I know, I’m late jumping on the bandwagon to read this book. I’ve actually had the book for many months now and it’s just been sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I just haven’t had the desire to read it.... more

“Are you afraid of the role you played in this loss?”

-Ann, Lili Taylor of Lifetime's "State Of Mind"

This is what I encountered while flipping through channels late at night, searching for something to help keep my eyes open just a bit longer. Boy did that open my eyes.

Lifetime’s new show “State Of Mind” staring Lili Taylor, aired a particularly interesting episode (only the show’s 4th) centering on a birthmother’s quest to locate her now 13... more

Prime Time TV Special on Adoption

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 03:39 am , 414 words, 82 views
Categories: Book/Film/Television

Prime Time on ABC has been running a series on “family secrets” and weekly they have aired an episode about some sort of secret. This week’s “secret” was the story of two birthmothers who shared their paths to birth motherhood with Prime Time.

By this being in the family secret series, I was expecting it to be about older birthmothers from the closed adoption era who were sent off to maternity homes to have... more

"Mom At Sixteen" A Lifetime Movie With Open Adoption Theme

Posted by : Deb Donatti in Open Adoption Blog at 10:50 pm , 653 words, 123 views
Categories: Resources/ Reviews, Book/Film/Television

While I know they can be corny, or inaccurate, and often play like a poor soap opera, I happen to enjoy watching those Lifetime channel movies. Yes even the ones about adoption. Sometimes they do not get it right, the terms are antiquated, or the information dated and biased to one area of the triad or another but every once and awhile I see or hear something I really like. So I keep watching.

The other day one such movie aired that lured me into watching as I unpacked from our recent vacation. The film, “Mom... more

Ahhhhhh, I am finally in Branson for the week! The view from our condo overlooking Table Rock Lake is nothing short of spectacular! After a late evening, dinner with friends, and a internet hookup downed due to a storm, I was unable to work on a post for today. I do have a post that I wrote some time ago, and it seemed worthy of sharing again, so I hope you will enjoy. I promise to be back with something new and refreshing, after I am awake and refreshed myself. ;)

Of the many interesting adoption related resources online I... more

What You Should Know - Carefully Consider

Posted by : Deb Donatti in Open Adoption Blog at 12:36 am , 404 words, 160 views
Categories: Blog/Blogger, Story/Article/Essay, For Birthmoms, Resources/ Reviews, For Adoptive Moms

Recently, Heather refreshed the memory of her readers, by clearly sharing her core views about adoption. For those who might be a bit “hard of reading”, they were in bold so the point could be easily grasped. I was not surprised by anything there, her views have remained the same as they were years ago when she wrote a publication for the organization C.U.B., “What you should know if you are considering adoption for your baby”.

Interesting Story in Reader's Digest

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 08:00 pm , 450 words, 208 views
Categories: Story/Article/Essay

Earlier, while relaxing for a few minutes, I was flipping through the new (July 2007) issue of Reader’s Digest when I stumbled upon a neat adoption story.

Laurie Thompson was a sales supervisor in the advertising department of a radio station in Erie, Pennsylvania, when one of her frustrated sales reps, Missi Meeley, dropped by her office one afternoon. The conversation turned friendly and Missi mentioned that she was adopted. Missi had gotten used to people asking questions when she told them she was adopted and wasn’t surprised when Laurie... more

In the News: A Special Birthday Celebration

Posted by : Coley S. in Open Adoption Blog at 03:01 pm , 355 words, 112 views
Categories: Story/Article/Essay, In The News

I came across an interesting article recently about a birth family and adoption family coming together for a quinceañera.

You are probably wondering what a quinceañera is and until I read this article, I had no clue either. It’s a celebration in the Latin communities that celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday and her entrance into womanhood. It’s a coming of age type thing. This particular quinceañera highlighted in the article was for a beautiful dark haired... more
