Earlier this week I was relaxing and watching Without a Trace. I was not expecting the show to have anything to do with adoption but of course it snuck up on me in the episode.
In case you don’t watch the show, I’ll explain the premise of it. In each episode a person (adult or child) goes missing and the missing persons unit (the main characters in the show) of the FBI tries to unravel the mystery and locate them.
The missing person on this particular episode was a young woman who was probably in her 30’s. While... more
I've been thinking long and hard about sharing some wise words from an adoptive mother about open adoptions here on the blog. All week, I've been trying to find the right words to share this post from Dawn over at This Woman's work. In her post, she really lays it on the line about some issues surrounding open adoption, adoptive parents and responsibility. I've wanted to share these words with our readers here because I feel that they are so vital to so many.
But I'm a birth mother.
It's fine for Dawn to be in-your-face about responsibility in adoption... more
I came across a very important post-slash-request over at Open Adoption Support. I feel the need to pass it on to you and hope that you will continue to pass it on. In short: some research is being done on adult adoptees who lived through open adoptions. Their opinions and experiences are requested via a survey.
And now, of course, the long and wordy version!
After reading the post, I contacted Christy Sherman to get some more information... more
On Saturday, I blogged about a new show on the WE channel called The Locator. In that post, I said I probably wouldn’t watch The Locator. This is an emotional time of year for me with my son’s upcoming birthday so I knew that I shouldn’t watch it but somehow my television ended up on that channel anyways. I admit I was curious and not very bright at that moment.
So as I mentioned in my previous post, The Locator features investigator Troy Dunn. He... more
There’s a new show coming on the WE channel that has the possibility of having the theme of adoption from time to time, more specifically adoption reunions.
The show, called, The Locator, features investigator Troy Dunn and he specializes in finding anyone that some one may be looking for such as lost loved ones, organ donors, birth relatives, etc.
This is the blurb taken from the show’s website about the show:
Troy Dunn is a phenomenon at reuniting people. From birth parents, to organ... more
In my last post, I shared bits and pieces of an interview with birthmom and author, Patricia Dischler. Patricia previously shared her experience with her semi open adoption that turned into an open adoption when her son was twelve.
Like any situation, there are positives and negatives involved. For Patricia, the positives to her situation were that she never really felt like she was saying goodbye to her son. She made the decision to place him for adoption because she wanted him... more
I recently had the opportunity to interview Patricia Dischler. Patricia is a birthmother and has written a book about her experience titled Because I Loved You.
Patricia placed her son for adoption at age 21. However, her first instinct was to parent but during her pregnancy the birth father left town and Patricia had run into some problems with her business partner (she co-owned a printing company) and eventually decided that adoption would be the best option for her baby.
All this... more
I was browsing my church bookstore not looking for anything in particular or even in a particular section when a book caught my eyes. It was titled A Treasury of Adoption Miracles; True Stories of God’s Presence Today by Karen Kingsbury. I immediately thought it was probably a book for adoptive parents as those are more common than books for birthparents but I was intrigued so I picked it up and looked at it.
I... more
Lifetime seems to feature a lot of movies that have an adoption theme, many of which have negative views of adoption and skewed views of the adoption process. However, there is one Lifetime movie that I enjoy, Mom at Sixteen.
Mom at Sixteen is the story of a teenage Mom, Jacey (played by Danielle Panabaker). When Jacey becomes pregnant, her Mom, Terry (Mercedes Ruehl) insists that she make an adoption plan. Jacey agrees and chooses adoptive parents. Right after her son is born... more
In my last post, I wrote about the movie Juno and the few positive points that I found in the movie. I found far more negative aspects to the movie than positive ones. Below are a few of the issues in the movie that made me cringe.
1. They really did not go into any issues that birthmothers face post adoption. The movie was pretty much over once Juno had her baby. I’m guessing this is because it wouldn’t make very good entertainment but to not really show or mention that at all gives... more
